Congratulations to Osborne, short-listed in the ‘Best Medium Project’ category at the 2013 Network Rail Partnership Awards for its replacement of the bridges, tracks and platforms at Marcon Place, Hackney. Over 99 hours during Easter Bank Holiday, seven independent rail bridges supporting four tracks and four platforms at Hackney Downs Station were demolished and reconstructed.

Hackney Downs station: one of the old bridges, and a new steel parapet built and installed by BS Steels

BS Steels was involved in designing, manufacturing and installing the new parapets, on a tight 4-week timescale. This included a number of technical challenges, including:

  • Our own EDM survey, modelled on our TEKLA® system, involving very complex loading calculations.
  • Design and manufacture, including galvanising, special anti-graffiti powder coating, and anti-vandal fixings.
  • More than 200 diamond-drilled holes through the concrete upstand, to zero tolerances.
  • An on-site timetable reflecting the necessity to have the parapets complete and services relaid and connected, before the platform extensions could be used.

We have published a page on this project including numerous images. You can also view Osborne’s remarkable timelapse video of the 99-hour project.

The Partnership Awards were created by Network Rail to reward great partnerships within the rail industry. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 24 July.
