BS Steels designed, manufactured and installed this new railway bridge parapet over Marcon Place, London E8.Over Easter Bank Holiday 2013, seven independent rail bridges supporting four tracks and four platforms at Hackney Downs Station were demolished and reconstructed – all within 99 hours. Main contractor Osborne’s time-lapse video (below) captures this remarkable and challenging project.BS Steels was asked to deliver the parapet within a 4-week timescale. This included:

  • Our own EDM survey, modelled on our TEKLA® system, involving very complex loading calculations.
  • Design and manufacture, including galvanising, special anti-graffiti powder coating, and anti-vandal fixings. We called on specialists MGC+ to galvanise and powder coat 10 tonnes of steel plates.
  • More than 200 diamond-drilled holes through the concrete upstand, to zero tolerances.
  • An on-site timetable reflecting the necessity to have the parapets complete and services relaid and connected, before the platform extensions could be used.

The Marcon Place Underbridge Reconstruction project was ‘Highly Commended’ in 2013’s Network Rail Partnership Awards for ‘Best Medium Project Category’.
