As a Tier 3 recommended contractor with Connect Plus, BS Steels’s specialist capabilities are often called upon on complex highway bridge repairs. Frequently, these are part of ongoing maintenance programmes, but we are always happy to be put to the test with more urgent repair requirements.
Throughout 2014, BS Steels was involved in preparations for free-flow tolls at the Dartford Crossing. We reported on these works in an earlier news item. These included installation of gantries and sign support assemblies, design and manufacture of test gantries to facilitate off-site trialling, and also additional emergency work. We published also an interesting time-lapse video.
More recently we were called to assist with urgent repairs to steel plates between two bridge spans at the Dartford Crossing. A series of 16mm thick plates, each weighing over 1 tonne, required urgent replacement. The technical challenge was very similar to the remedial works carried out by BS Steels on the M4 Boston Manor Viaduct in 2012. Using data from electronic scans, the plates were milled to match as exactly as possible the unique profile and undulations of the existing structure. Tolerance was 8-10 thousands of an inch, across 90% of the surface.
BS Steels made specialist machining facilities available at short notice, and within 5 days the job had been completed and the plates replaced on the bridge. The image shows the plates in place, with (inset) one of the assemblies created by BS Steels in 2012 for the M4 Boston Manor viaduct.
Highway management presents a multitude of engineering challenges. Once again, BS Steels succeeded in putting its rapid and effective response, and proven expertise, to help our client with this technically challenging and time-sensitive task.
