Steel and Services for Building Refurbishment

Building refurbishment has become one of the most important sectors of the national construction programme in the UK… refurbishment projects are also guided by three primary objectives. These are cost, time and quality and… each of the project objectives are usually associated with risk and uncertainty. – from Assessment of Risk and Technical Challenges associated with Building Refurbishment Schemes, RICS COBRA 2012

Renovation of existing and older buildings is a complex process – a successful refurbishment requires a solutions-led and partnership approach. A safe, timely and cost-effective result requires cooperation among all partners, at all stages of the project.

BS Steels provides steel and services for refurbishments across all sectors. Examples of refurbishments undertaken recently include:

  • Major office block and ‘change-of-use’ refurbishments, including prestigious properties such as 30 Berkeley Square, London W1, St Paul’s House, London EC4, and the former Cabinet Office building at Tufton Street, London SW1.
  • Commercial buildings and premises, optimising floor plans and layout.
  • We have considerable expertise in refurbishment of pubs, hotels and restaurants. These often require a mixture of careful survey, design and planning, and the flexibility to adapt, as old buildings reveal their hidden secrets! We also supply interior and architectural features, such as bar frontages, bespoke glass and bottle racks, footrests, shelving, railings in brass, stainless or mild steel. Many of these refurbishments are carried out within demanding schedules to minimise disruption to the business, or even alongside a still-operating business.
  • Mixed residential and commercial premises.
  • Listed and heritage buildings; buildings located in Conservation Areas.

The services we offer include:

  • EDM surveys and models
  • Preparation of 3D structural steelwork models
  • Preparation of drawings and connections
  • Close liaison with contractors, demolition contractors, architects, engineers and other relevant parties.
  • Manufacture and installation of structural steelwork
  • Specialist diamond drilling – steel and concrete
  • Installation of structural steel for new floor layouts, mezzanine floors and structural decking
  • Manufacture and installation of structural stair carcasses, lift and service shafts
  • Design, manufacture and installation of architectural metalwork and features
