Sports centre, HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth

Working for BAE Systems, BS Steels provided the steel for the refurbishment of this 19th century listed building, including a steel mezzanine floor, stairs, balustrades, and a glazed steel entrance canopy.

The goal of the overhaul was to make better use of The Old Gymnasium, whose space was previously largely given over to squash courts. At the same time it was essential to preserve the integrity of the Grade II listed building. The building now houses three offices, a modern reception area, five championship squash courts with viewing gallery and a fully fitted gym and weights area.

Key to all this was the installation of a mezzanine floor designed, manufactured and installed by BS Steels. This provided the space for the new cardiovascular suite, as well as additional viewing for the squash courts below.

This was part of a programme of investment at HMS Temeraire, described by Captain Mark Durkin, Captain of Naval Physical Development, as providing “truly world-class facilities that probably comprise the best sports complex anywhere on the south coast of England”.

The new facility was opened by Rear Admiral Matt Parr, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff, on 26th April 2013.
