The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme

The CHAS scheme has been developed since 1997 by local government health & safety professionals, with the support of the Health and Safety Executive. It is the market leader for health and safety pre-qualification in the UK.

Some of the requirements of CHAS are:

  • Health & Safety Policy, and procedures for checking, auditing and reviewing health and safety performance
  • Access to competent health and safety advice
  • Risk assessment procedures
  • Procedures for safe working at height
  • Written procedures for hazardous operations and handling hazardous materials
  • Training arrangements and workforce consultation
  • Environmental Policy

BS Steels is very pleased to announce that it is now formally accredited with the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (‘CHAS’)

General Manager Roger Slade commented: “At BS Steels, we have always striven to work to the best health and safety standards, whether on our premises, on site, making deliveries or elsewhere. The CHAS scheme gives us an invaluable independent confirmation that we work to nationally recognised and accepted standards.

CHAS is increasingly an integral part of applying for tenders, and where it enables us to pre-qualify for health and safety policy and procedures, we shall be able to focus even more fully on the requirements of the client and the project. This is an important step forward for BS Steels.”
